"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The sender also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous admirers have also coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly feature them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to start a band."

Grammy Nod

The band are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words follow departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed resilience required a new sound – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global following.

But the sister act will always be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
