Stephen Ireland began playing for the side in pre-season this season through close friend and present Wythenshawe teammate Blake Norton, and the ex- Irish player then invited additional former professionals, who all play in a midweek nine-a-side game, to participate.

"It's a little unusual but then, I love running and just move forward - I'm not defending that much," he added.

"I tell my defender 'I'm not staying' and that I'm just going to continue running.

"The movement is what I'm after. It's enjoyable."

'Surreal Feeling

In addition to the forward's six goals on debut, Ireland has netted 8 in 3 appearances for the side, while George Boyd scored five on his first match and Lescott, a defender by position, scored a hat-trick in one game as a striker.

One opponent, thirty-eight, who features on the wing for Collegiate OB, came up against ex- Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa on Sunday - and had to tell his young boy who Heskey was.

"I felt I was a little starstruck facing him to be honest.

"We competed well for a solid twenty minutes but then we had a player dismissed and it was hard.

"Our group literally haven't ceased talking about it - I was calling my mother and sibling on the way home.

"The opponents were all friendly, shaking our hands after the game - it was like facing a group of normal guys.

"Now we are eager for the second match."
